Who We Are

Zion is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and a member of the Northwestern Minnesota Synod of the ELCA.

We are a congregation of baptized members of the church of Christ, joined with the saints who have gone before, and responding in faith to the call of the Holy spirit through the Gospel. We are committed to its work of preaching the Word, administering the sacraments, and carrying out God’s mission.

What We Believe

Zion Lutheran Church believes, teaches, and confesses:

  1. The Triune God is Father, Son, and Holy spirit.
    1. Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, Word of God incarnate. Through Him everything was made, and through His life, death and resurrection, God fashions a new creation in us.
  2. The Holy Bible is God’s message to us both in Law and Gospel. It reveals God’s judgment and mercy through word and deed, beginning with the Word in creation, continuing in the history of Israel, and centering its fulfillment in the saving grace and love of Jesus Christ.
    1. The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the written Word of God. They are inspired by God’s Spirit speaking through their authors. They record and announce the revelation of God’s salvation in Jesus Christ. Through them God’s Spirit speaks to us to create and sustain Christian faith and fellowship for service in the world.
    2. The Gospel, recorded in the Holy Scriptures and confessed in the ecumenical creeds and Lutheran confessional writings, is witness to the power of God to create and sustain the Church for God’s mission in the world.
  3. The Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds are true declarations of the faith of this congregation.
  4. The Unaltered Augsburg Confession is a true witness to the Gospel.

Our Mission

We are created by God in Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, called and sent to bear witness to God’s redeeming, love to the world. To participate in God’s mission, we as a congregation:

  • Proclaim God’s Word and administer the sacraments through lives of prayer, praise, thanksgiving, witness, and service.
  • Proclaim the Gospel of justification by grace through faith alone, preserving and transmitting the Gospel faithfully to future generations.
  • Carry out Christ’s Great Commission by reaching out to all people to bring them to faith in Christ.
  • Serve in response to God’s love to care for the sick and the aged, advocate dignity and justice for all people, work for peace and reconciliation among the nations, and stand with the poor and powerless.
  • Nurture our members in the Word of God, to grow in faith and hope, to follow our Christian calling, and use the gifts of the Spirit for our life together and for the world.
  • Live together with all people in the love of Christ and join other Christians in prayer and action.

Our History

In 1890 eleven families joined in faith to strengthen their belief in God and their deep-felt convictions in the life and death of our Lord. Following and encouraged by the saints who have gone before us, Zion has continued to walk in faith and venture out upon the promises of God.
